French Language Support for Adults

What this service helps with

Some adults speak French but want to communicate more confidently and effectively. Speech-language therapy can help improve:

  • understanding spoken French in real-time conversation
  • speaking clearly and fluently
  • word finding and vocabulary access
  • sentence structure and grammar in speech
  • conversation skills and pragmatic language

This is different from traditional French classes or tutoring. As speech-language pathologists, we focus on the underlying communication processes (how you listen, process, retrieve words, and organize your thoughts in French) rather than teaching grammar rules or vocabulary lists.

Who this service is for

French language support may be helpful for adults who:

  • work in French-speaking environments and need stronger communication skills
  • are preparing for French language exams such as the TCF (Test de connaissance du français) or TEF (Test d’évaluation de français)
  • want to improve professional communication in French: meetings, presentations, phone calls
  • speak French as a second language and feel their speaking ability does not match their knowledge
  • have moved to a French-speaking workplace and want to feel more confident

If pronunciation is your primary concern, you may also be interested in accent modification.

What to expect

Assessment

We begin by assessing your current French communication skills, including listening comprehension, speaking fluency, word finding, pronunciation, and conversational ability. We also discuss your goals and the contexts where you use French.

Therapy sessions

Sessions are built around your goals and may include:

  • conversation practice in French on topics relevant to your work or daily life
  • pronunciation and intonation practice for sounds that are difficult for you
  • word-finding strategies to help you access vocabulary more quickly
  • structured practice for specific situations: phone calls, meetings, presentations
  • strategies for improving real-time listening comprehension

Progress

Most clients notice a difference within a few sessions, especially in confidence and how smoothly they speak. We adjust goals as you improve.
